‘It is sometimes called Knock Hill and Clatto Knock’ (OS Name Book 19, 6), and this is borne out by Adair’s form (1684). Thus Roy’s map (sheet 18, 1) Knock to the west of Clatto (Cletty) may represent Clatto Hill (but see also Bowhill # KTT). Sc knock is a loan-word from G cnoc ‘hill, hillock’, and as such is very rare in Fife. It is therefore more likely that it was coined by Gaelic-speakers (see PNF 5, Elements Glossary, s.v.), as *Knokcletty or the like, by analogy with earlier Knoklargauch for Largo Law LAR.
